A few quick pieces of advice...
I wouldn't necessarily recommend you start research your first semester as a freshman. Take that time to get used to actually being in college, new courses, the campus environment, and forming your friend/study group. A good time to start reaching out to professors would be at some point during your sophomore year, maybe before your spring semester starts. This way, you've taken some classes, you've had a few professors, and you know the ropes of the school a bit better. If you are still anxious to start research, the absolute earliest I would start is your second semester (your email to a professor would then be sent at the end of your first semester).

I started my research during the summer between sophomore and junior year, a bit too late in my opinion (as a personal preference), but I was still quite productive as my physics background was stronger and I was able to think more creatively. It's also easier to get research done when all of your general education requirements are out of the way.
